Paligremnos, the huge rock on the east end of the bay, is the landmark of Plakias. It is a vertical limestone slope with impressive slots. The rock attracts many climbers from all around Crete. The structure and shape of the rock is ideal not only for advanced but also for new climbers. Spring and autumn are the most suitable climbing seasons; however, as long as it is not windy, you can climb all year round.
The limestone is of very good quality. Climbing is done using clefts and slab. “ARIADNI” is the most classic climb. “SPACE CAKE”, “MINIMALIST” and “MINOTAVROS” are excellent for slab climbing. For young climbers, “FODELE” can be really exciting. The rock offers a variety of handholds. In recent years, it has become very popular among climbers. Several new difficult routes have been opened, mainly by Cretan climbers.
